April Ross

April Ross, a beach volleyball player from the United States, is among a select set of females who've had medals won in more than one Olympics. Alix Klineman is a new Olympian and will join her at Tokyo. Ross's aim is to get her first Olympic Gold. As she turns 39, it could be her final chance to win the gold medal at an Olympics. However, she's convinced that top prizes are in reach. Ross told NBC Boston that if they are at their absolute best and even play well her team could win a gold medal. "I'm planning to test some luck." Ross was born in Costa Mesa, California in 1982. Her parents and sister lived in the area. In addition to participating in a variety of sport, she also attended Newport Harbor High School. Her prep athletic career included indoor volleyball as well as basketball as well as track and running. In her final game she stood out. In her college profile, she was an outside hitter middle blocker, and setter throughout her volleyball time in high school. For her efforts she was awarded in 1999 as the Gatorade International Player of the year in Circle of Champions. In addition, she was awarded the 2000 Orange County Athlete of the Year trophy for volleyball. Ross has been playing alongside Klineman since the year 2017 but her beach game was established well before this. In fact, she's been able to win multiple events, and one was won by an iconic volleyball player. From 2007 to 2013 she was in a partnership by Jennifer Kessy, who is now her coach. Alongside Kessy Ross was an ace on the international stage, claiming a world title in 2009. They took home a Silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. They were defeated for the gold by the legendary duo comprising Misty and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Jennings took over for May-Treanor after she retired. The pair went on to earn bronze in beach volleyball during the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross was a college player at USC Trojans prior to beginning her pro career. She played during high school and in some years before she hit the beach as a professional. Her time at USC was an impressive one. She was a All-American as well as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in the year 2000, a young freshman. In 2000, her Trojans also reached the Final Four. The Trojans suffered a significant personal loss during her sophomore year, however, she was able to achieve the All-American distinction. Over her final two years in the program she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain netting successive national titles. She was a fantastic player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female college volleyball player. Ross majored in the field of international relations in USC. Margie Ross did not get to witness her daughter's rise to the beach volleyball spotlight. In 2001 when Ross was in her sophomore year studying at USC her mother died of breast cancer. She continues to cherish her late parent. In addition, Margie is an ongoing source of encouragement for her on the beach as well as in everyday life.
